previous exhibition

September 6th - 17th

In keeping with the Lavit Gallery's long standing policy of helping and promoting emerging artists - our next show is this year'sFledglingsexhibition, featuring work from a selection of recent graduates of the Crawford College of Art and Design.

For many of these recent graduates and students it is their first opportunity to show work in a professional gallery setting.Thirteen artists will be participating in this year's exhibition -Lucy Buckley, Tom Dalton, Helen Doherty, June Fairhead, Joe Healy, Margaret Horgan, Laura Mangan, Frank McGrath, Jill Neill, Carmen Nesdale,Tina (Darb)O'Sullivan, Svetlana Shuks and Sabine Weissbach.

Painting, print, drawing, photography and ceramics all feature in this exhibition, with a variety of subjects and approaches being utilised by this group of new artists. Emptiness seems to be a feature of much of the photography work, withMargaret Horgan's interiors of the old Cork Airport building,Frank McGrath'sgallery interior andJune Fairhead's images of sky.

Paintings of landscape also feature strongly with paintings and drawings of rural estates bySabine Weissbach, Cork's riverside appearing in paintings bySvetlana Shuksand St. Finbarre's Cathedral appearing in the atmospheric work ofLucy Buckley. Local surroundings ie. Cork's Northside also appears in the prints ofJoe Healy. A more anonymous urban environment is depicted in the work ofLaura Mangan, who also uses print, but unusually screenprints onto aluminium. Jill Neillalso uses a print technique - embossing, to create her subtle delicate abstract patterns. While a series of abstract marks also appear in the paintings byCarmen Nesdale's, these are combined with a bold, use of colour.

Tina (Darb)O'SullivanandHelen Dohertyshow ceramic work, with Tina's two dimensional wall pieces focusing on painterly glazes, while Helen Doherty's plates and vessels feature figurative line drawings.

In some cases this is a chance to see how these artists' work has been developing since their end of year show, while in other cases it is a chance to see the work in a new light. This exhibition will be officially opened by Orla Flynn - acting head, CIT Crawford College of Art and Design, on September 6thand will run until September 17th.
