August 28th - September 8th

In keeping with the Lavit Gallery's long standing policy of helping and promoting emerging artists - our next show is this year's Fledglings exhibition, featuring work from a selection of recent graduates of the Crawford College of Art and Design.

Seventeen artists have been selected to participate in this year's exhibition. This year's exhibition differs slightly from other years in that while twelve of the artists will show one piece each, five of the artists have been picked out for special mention and invited to show up to three pieces each.    The five artists who have received this extra invitation are Cassandra Eustace, Emer Kelly, Jessica Knibb, Colin O' Connor and Erica Szel, while the full list of participants also includes Anne Ahern, Christian Buchner, Tracy Fitzgerald, Gwenda Forde, Teresa Hearne, Carol McGabhann, James Nagle, Katie O' Donoghue, Shay Quinn, Sarah Ryan,Dola Twomey and Norma Walsh

Painting, drawing, photography, mixed media sculpture, installation and ceramics all feature in this exhibition, with a variety of subjects and approaches being utilised by this group of new artists. Minimal photographs of glass, a cupcake installation, realist painting, pop art, architectural studies, sculptures created with folded paper and detailed Japanese like drawings are just some of what will feature in this show full of variety and promise.

For many of these recent graduates and students it is their first opportunity to show work in a professional gallery setting. In many cases this is a chance to see how these artists' work has been developing since their end of year show, while in other cases it is a chance to see the work in a new light. In these tough times artists need all the encouragement they can get, to keep on the track of their early career paths, and the Lavit Gallery would like to acknowledge Parfrey Murphy and Co. chartered accountants who have sponsored this show.

This exhibition will be officially opened by Orla Flynn - Head of CIT Crawford College of Art and Design, on Tuesday August 28th at 8p.m. and will run until September 8th.

Running concurrently, the Lavit Gallery continues it's focus on craft in the downstairs gallery, as part of Cork Craft Month.
